My late Nana's voice message is lost on my Dad's broken iPhone

My dad’s old iPhone was water damaged recently. It only holds the Apple logo and then goes off. He didn’t back up his iCloud often, so there’s nothing to restore on his new phone through his iCloud. He didn’t explain why he was so upset, he’d just say over and over that he was gutted that loads of his songs were on there (I’m sure he’s gutted about all of them as well). But eventually, my mum explained that they’d managed to transfer an old voicemail from his mum, who passed a couple of years ago, onto his voice notes. Since I found out, I’ve tried to figure out how to get it back for him, but I know it’s out of my ability. I know I can go to the Apple Store to get them to force update it, but unfortunately, if it fails, it’ll be wiped for good. Is there anyone who knows how to help? It’s close to Christmas, so I was hoping to give it to him privately. He deserves it. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

“they’d managed to transfer an old voicemail”

How?

No idea, it was a rough explanation from my mum. I wasn’t too caught up on the details, more concerned as to what they’d lost on the phone.

@Sky
The reason I ask is because that voicemail might be in an email somewhere if that’s how it got to the phone.

I see, very good point. I hadn’t thought of that. I can quiz them on that.

@Sky
Just go look through their sent emails and sort by attachment and size.

You can export voice mails on iPhone to audio files iirc

I know. And that’s my point. How did it get to the new phone? Go find that export.

Ehnmm… a voicemail is not stored on the device itself, but rather on a server somewhere? Or am I missing something here?

If you go to the Genius Bar and explain the situation, they might be able to do some data recovery on the device. They can sometimes access data on devices even if they don’t boot. You could also look into data recovery services outside of Apple.

@Westley
Do you know any data recovery service outside of Apple? I’d be happy to go external.

Also, from what I read, do not go to the Genius Bar/Apple Store with it. It sounds like they will, at best, likely be unsuccessful, as they don’t really do in-depth hardware repairs, and at worst, they might try to factory reset the phone, which could delete all data permanently.

@Westley
Yeah, they tried doing it last time. I thought I’d rather not risk it. Sure, I’ll find somewhere/someone to retrieve it—I’d rather take the time to.

I was just doing some reading on that! I am not an expert in this, but based on a cursory glance, I found iPad Rehab in NY and Data Recovery Guru in Boston. I’m sure you could find someone else in your region too.

@Westley
I’m from England, but knowing that companies do provide that is positive. Thank you for having a look. I appreciate it.

No worries! It’s a good thing you are trying to do, so I’m happy to help! I found this thread in the r/datarecovery subreddit:

@Westley
That’s brilliant, thank you so much! I’ve whacked a post in, and I’m going to look through all the places listed in the post. Thanks again, you may have just pointed me in the right direction.
