I’ve been an Android user since the days of the old HTC Hero. Years ago, I tried the iPhone 8 Plus but found the OS too restrictive for my liking. Fast forward to today: I’m currently using a Samsung S23 Ultra but have become increasingly concerned about Google’s data collection and privacy practices.
In light of this, I decided to give the iPhone another chance. I purchased a used iPhone 15 Pro (1TB) today and am ready to see if it’s a better fit for me this time. However, I’m not planning to dive fully into the Apple ecosystem, mainly because it’s beyond my budget. For context, I use Linux as the OS on my PCs. I also work in production in a warehouse environment, so I opted for a Caseborne case to protect my new phone. While it’s not the prettiest case, it’s incredibly durable and has done a fantastic job protecting my Samsung from drops.
I’d appreciate any tips to help make the transition to iOS smoother. I used to be heavily into flashing custom ROMs on Android, but as I’ve gotten older, I now prioritize simplicity and reliability. My biggest concern is missing Android’s extensive customization options.
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
IOS is more customizable than ever and I believe you won’t find the transition to be too “frustrating”. If you haven’t already go ahead and make sure iOS 18 is installed (iOS 18.2.1 is the current version) and iOS 18 is when the iPhone became much more like android but while still completely respectful of your privacy! There’s so much you can do to control how you’re tracked. You can disable pretty much all tracking.
I think you will find the gestures and U.I. easy to navigate around… Once you get used to multitasking on iPhone and jumping around apps, it becomes second nature. You will have a very stable and optimized experience.
Keep in mind since this is your first iPhone in sometime anytime you updated software it takes multiple days before battery life levels out. This is normal. Right now you have the option with iOS 18.2.1 to enable or disable Apple intelligence. I wouldn’t turn it on until iOS 18.3 is released in the spring. This is when it will have most of the features that have been touted in the marketing.
So with Apple intelligence anytime you decide you don’t want it, you can toggle it off. If you think you need or would want it, you can go into the settings and toggle it on.

That’s good to know. I love that I can disable the tracking. Android let’s you disable tracking but, I’m pretty sure it’s just a farce. I’m not a big fan of AI right now, though I do use ChatGPT intermittently and have been impressed with it. Most baked in AI services I have used tend to suck.
@Blake
I agree! I would rely on 3rd party AI. Services like ChatGPT for your A.I. needs. I am not using Apple intelligence yet on my iPhone. There’s no point yet since it’s in its infancy. It’s only got a few useful features at the moment. The “big stuff” is coming in the spring.
But again not to be redundant I am with you, I would rely on as an example Microsoft copilot, chat GPT, etc etc for your A.I. needs for the time being.
Impressed that you have the 1 TB model btw! I’ve got the 256 GB. With 1 TB you should be able to shoot tons of 4k video until your heart is content.
@Milan
Agreed on the AI issue. The 1TB model is overkill as I’m using less than half of the 512GB on my android. It was about $1000 (only about $150 more than the 512GB listed with 85%-90%) with tax and free shipping and has 100% battery health.

I’ve never spent this much money on a phone before so I’m nervous lol.
I get it! Put mine in a Tech 21 case and screen protector. It was a $60 case and $60 screen protector. I’m not taking any chances. Unfortunately, my cellphone carrier makes Applecare even more expensive than it would be going directly through Apple so I couldn’t afford the Applecare. Seems like it was an extra $25/month on the bill just for the AppleCare! That is ludicrous
They added it without asking and when I saw the bill I cancelled it after a month.
