iPhone Not Refocusing During Video Recording?

Experiencing an issue with my iPhone camera. When I record video, it doesn’t refocus automatically on new subjects as I move the camera. Is there something I’m missing or is this a known issue?

It looks like you might have locked the focus by tapping. When the focus box remains visible, it usually means AE/AF lock is on.

I appreciate the insight, but I believe the issue is separate from AE/AF lock. In my screenshots, you’ll see the focus box in some but not the AE/AF lock text. My question is more about why the camera doesn’t automatically refocus while recording.

@Oaklan
The AE/AF LOCK text can disappear after a few seconds. Try a light tap instead of holding down to focus, as holding down will engage the lock feature.

Tested this on my iPhone 16 Pro. If I tap to change the focus, it doesn’t refocus automatically during recording. But if I start recording without tapping, it does refocus as I move the camera. Not sure why tapping disables the automatic refocus.

@Blake
I can’t seem to replicate this issue on my 16PM. When I tap to focus, then move the camera, it refocuses automatically. Strange!

@Blake
Exactly my issue!

My 16 Pro behaves similarly. I start recording, tap to focus, and then it doesn’t refocus as I move to different objects.

I’m not experiencing this on my 16PM. After tapping to focus on one object, the camera still refocuses on new subjects when I move it. Anyone else with a 16PM having this issue?

I’m on a 15PM with iOS 18.1 and can’t recreate this. It may be specific to the iPhone 16. For me, it refocuses automatically even after I tap to focus.

Not a bug, a feature!

I’ve noticed this as well. It seems the camera is using computational photography, blending images for focus. It doesn’t seem precise.
