iPhone 15 camera always takes dull and dark photos compared to the display iPhone at store

I went to the Apple store and checked the iPhone 15 camera there. Both front and back cameras are slightly brighter compared to my newly bought iPhone 15. It just makes my face dull and dark, and dark areas go much darker. Photos don’t look that good.

There is nothing I am able to do. I was comparing both phones for 30 minutes, tried all settings. The store manager says it’s just Apple tactics, and they have better display settings on demo phones, and was unhelpful.

I don’t understand why this is. Is there anything I can do?

I am not sure what’s going on, but you can test that (stupid sounding) theory very easily: Airdrop one of the store iPhone’s pictures to your own iPhone. Then you have both pictures on the same screen.

Do you have HDR turned on with your phone? Those at the Apple shop will have HDR turned on. Settings → Photos → View Full HDR.

I tried all modes, all features in every setting. The demo phone takes much crisper, brighter photos, just looks better.

@Florian
This is not in camera settings though. Where all other settings are. I’d double-check to be sure, but if you have, then I don’t know.

If you are on iOS 18, it could be an HDR issue caused by iOS 18. You can check by simply covering the lens of your phone and clicking a photo. Make sure it’s all black. Turn on ‘View Full HDR’ in the Photos app and Dark Mode is usually preferred. Make sure low power mode is turned off as HDR won’t work on LPM. Go to a dark environment and give a few taps to that black picture you took. If it flickers, then I guess Apple has something to do with their HDR on iOS 18. All my friends are having this, but none of the iOS 17 people have this. Check my post [link].

@Florian
What’s your iOS version?

The stores are extremely bright. This way, the photos tend to be clearer and brighter, as the camera has an easier time capturing them. Furthermore, the screen brightness is very high. Perhaps if you take photos in open, well-lit environments you will be able to get better results.

@Laken
I was comparing mine side by side in the same location. Trust me, I tried every setting, even the store guy says demo phones here are tweaked better.
